My first step... My first entry

The first step in my Japanese adventure is creating a blogspot. This is new to me so already the adventure begins! My goal is to share my adventures, my thoughts, and even my misadventures.

First, a few caveats and provisos (excuses):
1. This is a spotaneous writing, do not expect the Queen's English.
2. Sometimes as a teacher it is hard to express thoughts and feelings. Sometimes as a student it's hard to empathize with a teacher... just give me a break!
3. Beware: No spell check on this blog.

In short, this blog will highlight my (all-expense paid) trip to Japan. The goal of the Fulbright Foundation (the people who paid for this trip) is to educate teachers about Japan so that they might better educate their students. This is the first step in that journey!

hey mr. lahr!
i hope you have a great time on your trip. i looked up japenese manners and i copy and pasted it from the website, so it is in the exact words as the website states.

The most important table etiquette in Japan is saying traditional phrases before and after a meal. Japanese people say, "Itadaki-masu" before a meal and say "Gochisou-sama" after a meal. These phrases mean thanks for the food and also indicate the beginning and the ending of a meal. If you are eating with Japanese people, try to say these phrases.

Mr. Lahr,
I found a fact for you about eating in reasurants while you are in Japan. In Japanese restaurants, customers are given a rolled hand towel called oshibori (お絞り, oshibori?). It is considered rude to use the towel to wipe one's face or neck; however, some people, usually men, do this at more informal restaurants. When one uses tooth picks, it is etiquette for one to cover their mouth with the other hand. Blowing one's nose is considered rude in public, especially at a restaurant. It is polite for one to cover their nose with their hand, or excuse themself to do it in the restroom. It is the custom in every Japanese household to take one's shoes off when entering the house. It is generally considered polite to wear shoes instead of sandals, but sandal wearers may carry a pair of white socks to put over their bare feet or stockings, so that their bare feet will not touch the slippers that the host offers. The shoes are turned around so that the toe faces the door after taking them off.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customs_and_etiquette_of_Japan).I hope this will help you on your trip if you go out to eat or when you enter someones house.

Hey Mr. Lahr,
I read about your Japanese adventure on the main page, and I feel...well jealous to be honest, although I am extremely happy that you are going to such a well-developed country. I hope you have a lot of fun visiting there and learn about their culture and society. I hope you enjoy Japan, but aren't you going to miss you favorite students?

Your Student,

When you eat the Japanese noodles, please eat with your enthusiasm, please making sounds, if not, it will be very rude for the chief and people around you.

Hi Mr.Lahr!
Hope you have a great time at Japan! When you eat noodle, please eat as LOUD as you can, if you don't, the cook will think that you don't like their cooking styles and their home made noodles. When you eat sushi, eat it with one huge bite. Say "Yee-ka-ta-shee-mas" before you eat you lunch or dinner.
Japan is a great place to visit, have fun!

Dear Mr. Lahr,
If yow walk into a restaurant and if they are low tables inside the restaurant for good manners you have to kneel or sit crossing your legs so you will have able to reach the table.

Dear Mr.Lahr:
It's Mandy again!
I have a suggestion, there is a movie called, "Shinobi:Heart Under Blade". This movie was interesting and fun, it was breathtaking, and a romance movie, too. This movie is modern and very sad. I love this movie because the characters in there are very stunning, I don't if this is the right word to describe them, but I think, Shinobi is my favorite!
