I need to bring a special gift for the family that I live with for a few days. Here is an excerpt from the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Education Program handbook explaining about the gift:
It would be very nice if you would bring a nongendered gift for your host family, as they are volunteers who will open up their homes for you to experience an ordinary Japanese life. ... These could be a hard cover photo book of American scenery, or of your state, or a decorative item representing your region, a Tshirt, sweatshirt or baseball cap with the logo of your state, school or local sports team. It should be no more than $40 or so. Be creative with your gift.
So, which one of my creative students can suggest the most appropriate gift. (Also, remember, it needs to be able to fit easily in the ONE suitcase that I'm allowed to bring.)

Dear Mr. Lahr,
A great gift would be our 2007-2008 yearbook showing them how our school works and who you work with. Also you could make a scrap book things you see around you but that you wont find in Japan. This would bring your world closer to theirs.
Twice a year, in December and in June, it is common for co-workers, friends and relatives to exchange gifts. this is good to give if you have a close friend.

When you go to Japan Mr.Lahr you should give your host a gift that shows where we are from. You should bring your host or hostess a test tube of our beaches sand and a post card to show where you're from. Mr.Lahr I think this would be a great gift for your host in Japan.

Hello Mr. Lahr,
Gift, huh? Well you could give them a ton of things! You should probably buy them some American stuff because they would probably want that certain item more than anything else. Now, that gift should be something that is found only in America, so that it's special and can't be bought in Japan. Since you are the ART teacher, I would recommend you make your students create a special "THANK YOU FOR HAVING MR. LAHR" gift card, signed by everyone in the class. You could probably design the card. You should also include a yearbook from our school, so that they can see how our school's things run. You could also take pictures of us as well as the school, so that the family can see us. You could buy a statue of a bald eagle with some sort of American flag attached to it. The bald eagle will represent United States nicely. Also, you could give them some new American coins and dollar bills, as they will appreciate them very much. Well, those are some ideas. They are fairly cheap to buy and you can fit them in your suitcase easily, so you can get couple of those items. If I find some other interesting gift for your hosts, I will post it here.

Hey Mr. Lahr this is J-man i was just looking at a website that might help you with your gift problem the name of the website is http://www.japanesegifts.com of Thank you for your time from a fellow AVID student. I hope this information helps you with your gift problem. :)

Hi Mr. Lahr,
You should give them some sea shells. Even people who live by the beach enjoy those gifts. They're easy to find too. You can buy them or look for some yourself.

So, I'm not one of your students but I definitely think a Paulding sweatshirt is in order.

i think that most kids or families in japan will like sand from our beaches...

Hmmm...another gift idea...Well Mr. Lahr, you could gift them some American flags, you know the little ones. Those will later show them that you had visited them from United States. Nothing really special, but something they can keep and remember you by (not that they would forget you or anything!). I'll write more ideas as the days pass...and as you come closer and closer to your trip to JAPAN!

The number four is very bad in Japan. So never give a four piece gift. The reson for this is because they pronouce four the same way they pronouce death.

Hi Mr. Lahr,
Another thing to give your Japanese hosts could be a picture of one of your classes. Preferably 4th period.

Dear Mr.Lahr,
Many people will ask a guest to open a gift, but if they do not, the Japanese will resist the urge to ask if they can open the gift. Since the act of accepting a gift can create a sense of unfulfilled obligation on the part of the receiver, gifts are sometimes refused, depending on the situation.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customs_and_etiquette_of_Japan)I hope this will help you on what to get and what not to get as a gift to the Japanese.

Hi Mr. Lahr,
A lot of people say bringing sand to Japan may be a good idea, but I think a bright student like me has something better involving the beach. I suggest you gather some shells that seem very cool to show to people in Japan. Also, you can bring a picture of Pismo Beach or Avila Beach.Another good gift would be some sweets from local stores like some stores in the village. Why don't you also bring a pictures of your favorite classes in Paulding? I suggest taking a group picture of your favorite 4th period art class!!!! That would be cool!!!

Dear Mr. Lahr,
I suggest another good gift would be an anime or manga book that is translated in english.People in Japan can see the difference between their anime or manga books to the ones you may bring. You can get these books maybe at Barnes and Noble or at Borders. I was thinking about the Arroyo Grande Library, but I know your going to be gone for more than 3 weeks I'm guessing.
-Louise :-)
PS: I don't have any manga books if your going to ask, SORRY!!! I mainly get my manga books at the library, so yeah.... ;-)
Hi Mr. Lahr
I think that a very creative gift would be an art project made by all your students this way you could introduse the family your going to be living with. But in order to keep it small you could have every student make somthing very very small.

Mr Lahr-
I think a good gift to bring to Japan would be a envelope full of pictures of landmarks and cities. This will be good for those who have not seen california.
